Masca Gorge — The Hike Every Visitor Should Know About
The Barranco de Masca is one of the most dramatic gorge hikes in the Canary Islands. Carved through ancient volcanic rock, the trail descends from the village of Masca down to a secluded beach accessible only on foot or by boat.
The Route
The hike starts from Masca village (650m altitude) and descends 6km through the gorge to the coast at Playa de Masca. The descent takes 2.5–3 hours and involves scrambling over rocks and crossing the gorge stream multiple times. The terrain is rugged — it's not suitable for beginners or anyone with mobility issues.
Permits Required
Since 2022, a free permit is required to hike the Barranco de Masca. Book through the Cabildo de Tenerife website (cabildo.tenerife.es). Places are limited to preserve the trail. The permit is linked to a specific date and departure time.
Getting Back
You cannot return the same way — a boat picks up hikers from the beach at scheduled times and takes them to Los Gigantes harbour (approx. €20 per person). Book your return boat in advance as spaces are limited.
What to Bring
Minimum 2 litres of water per person, suncream, snacks, closed-toe shoes with grip, and a hat. There is no shade in the lower part of the gorge. The beach at the end has no facilities whatsoever.
Best Time
Spring (March–May) is ideal — not too hot, the gorge stream is flowing beautifully and wildflowers bloom on the canyon walls. Avoid July–August when the gorge becomes dangerously hot. Start as early as possible to avoid the midday sun.
